SCIENCE TODAY

A perennially fascinating question to scientists is how animals get liquids into their faces without cups, straws or hands. In recent years they’ve cracked the puzzle in dogs and cats, two creatures that often do their noisy drinking near us. Bees, too, sip nectar in plain sight of humans. But their methods are more subtle and mysterious.
Shaoze Yan, a mechanical engineering professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, and his colleagues took a very close look at Italian honeybees to see how they drink nectar. The researchers combined high-speed photography with images from a scanning electron microscope, which revealed the bees’ intricately built mouthparts.

The honeybee’s tongue, called a glossa, is about 2.5 millimeters long in this species. The authors note that up close, it “resembles a mop.” That’s because the glossa is covered in long hairs.
When the bee is ready to drink nectar from a flower, the mouthparts surrounding the tongue “form a sucking tube.” Then the long glossa stretches down through the tube to dip into the liquid.
Video footage revealed that a bee’s tongue is not the dumb mop it resembles. Instead, the hairs on the glossa are active. When the bee’s tongue extends, the hairs snap outward. First those at the base of the tongue stand on end, then the middle hairs, and finally the ones on the tip. Then they flatten again as the bee withdraws its tongue, slurping up the sweet nectar caught in its bristles.
Although standing the tongue hairs out at a perfect 90 degrees would capture the most nectar, the hairs in the study didn’t extend that far. The researchers think this is because bees have to balance the amount of nectar in each sip with the drag that the sticky liquid generates on their tongues. Standing up their tongue hairs in this order, and to this degree, might be the most efficient way they can suck up nectar.
One lap of a bee’s tongue—from stretching out the glossa to extending the hairs like an umbrella and folding everything up again—lasts just 400 milliseconds. It’ll take at least a few of those before scientists find the next animal tongue to study. Meanwhile, you can see the whole sequence here:

(THE GIST with Captain FwesH): TOP NIGERIA’S FEATURED SONGS IN 2014

Last week we discussed about the singles top 10 and this week we will be digging the top 10 featured songs of 2014 as listed below in no particular other and note, the songs made the lists on the basis of time of release and subscriber's votes. Enjoy!

Wizzy Pro Beatz Ft Skales, Runtown and Patoranking (Emergency) – The combination of the trio was a perfect pick for the kind of song cause it featured the very best newness in the industry whose songs were hits last year; Runtown with “Gallardo” “Baby answer” and “Domot”, Patoranking with “Girlie O” “Happy day” and “Daniella” and Skales with “Shake body”. The song also won the award for the best collaboration song for 2014 at the Headies award and It no doubt deserves a spot on the rating.

Runtown Ft Davido (Gallardo) - This song was not just a hit, it was a super blockbuster last year. The penthauz signee ‘Runtown’ thought it right to partner Davido in the song and the two combinations were justified. I must say the song gave Versace the trend in the country with the likes of Gallardo (a car) and Victoria Kimani (Kenyan beauty and singer) sharing in the spotlights too. I give it Kudos to Runtown because He’s sure showing finesse to owning a spot in the industry for real.

Mavin (Dorobucci) – Undoubtedly the best record label and group in the Nigeria Music Industry at the moment. The group’s hit song sold-out massively and was accredited with millions of downloads online and more so gave the label’s new signees the exposure needed talking about the African Prince ‘Korede Bello’, the pretty damsel and diva Di’ja and Headies Rookie of the year winner and ‘Chop Am’ singer, Reekado Banks.
‘Dorobucci’ Produced by the legendary producer himself and Label’s C.E.O, Don-Jazzy, the hit made the lists of top songs last year and on a no question note one of the best 2014 club bangers.

Patoranking Ft Tiwa Savage (Girlie O) – Hullabaloo was the case when unexpectedly the then just married Tiwa Savage was seen in a video ‘Girlie O’ remix giving Patoranking the body lock thingy, apart from the news that she actually paid off the singer so as to feature in the remix …Hmmm!! Whatever, people will always talk and the song was in the end even more better of preferred to the original song as Tiwa Savage gave it the best shot and we all loved it.

Sheyi Shay Ft Patoranking & Shaydee (Murder) – The song made people spread the news of Sheyi Shay and Patoranking having an affair but it later turned out to be just rumours and she said something like that too at the Lagos countdown saying Patoranking was just like a brother and something about Wizkid as her ‘Little Boss’ too, Shay really?!. Anyways, the song was dope and the combination was cool too. I also have a think for the twerking in the video as displayed by Sheyi Shay and the beat, lyrics and content …*winks!

Jesse Jagz Ft Wizkid (My Girl) – Jagz was probably laying low for a while trying to pick up after he left his former record label where his brother M.I and Collegeaus Ice Prince and Brymo were signed in too at the time. Although the come-back seemed like anarchy with the army troop ‘Jesse Jagz Nation’ promotions but it in the end paid off with an album and the collaboration with Wizkid was concerned the rapper’s best hit in 2014. The song a cool rap RnB song was much of a thing you want to enjoy on bed, in your car or any place cool for hanging out maybe or maybe not. It made the list though.

Flavour Ft Wande Coal (Wake Up) – The song was number one for several weeks on top countdowns like Africa Rox on soundcity, Trace Urban hits and Pepsi Music chart show Top ten.
In a way I could tell no one ever thought of the duos combination because it did be difficult to imagine the kind of music they did put together and they did, beating our imaginations despite the odds with thumbs snap like ‘Wake Up’. The duos voices were hard to differentiate because it was Makossa-like …It was worth the Combi!

Lil’Kesh, Davido, Olamide (Shoki Remix) – The first time I heard it, it sounded like a joke but when played in clubs I always get to ask DJs if it was still actually the same version with the one I heard on my phone cause the mixing sounded wacky …I probably had the low quality version then or should I say the air-play made me bias about the flaws (Well, enough of me right now). The remix like ‘Girlie O’ beat the original track and the Davido, Olamide’s parts were insane and I’m sure that resulted in the ban placed on the air-play by the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and only allowed on wee hours. The female version too was also nice with Chidima, Muna and Eva. Altogether, the song was a boom in 2014.

L.A.X Ft Wizkid (Ginjah) – After ‘Caro’ was another combination of the two ‘Ginjah’. The song came out early in 2014 and throughout the year was a reference song on radio and in Clubs. L.A.X owns the song and it turned out to be counted as one of Wizkid’s top songs for 2014. Whatever and whichever way, the duos represents the same record label, who cares! …expect L.A.X does?!!.

Wizkid Ft Phyno (Bombay) – Produced by Dr Frabs at the time he did one of his hits with him ‘Joy’, the song released directly as a video was however to surprise his fans but it did not struck much as his other singles like ‘Show you the money’, ‘In my bed’ and ‘Ojuelegba’ beats the list but the songs was cool and vibey though with Phyno killing it with his blistering and bouncing punch lines. On note too, the video was a no comment one as it was standard for the kind of song and am sure many of you enjoyed it too.
