FASHION TODAY:

HOST: RIHANNA

Rihanna established herself as a star in summer 2005 with her debut smash hit, "Pon de Replay," and continued to demonstrate her smash hit potential in subsequent years (e.g., "S.O.S.," 2006; "Umbrella," 2007). By the time of her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad (2007), she was a full-fledged international pop star with a regular presence atop the charts, from Germany to Japan. Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty on February 20, 1988, in Saint Michael, Barbados, she always exhibited a special quality, winning beauty and talent contests as a schoolchild. But because she lived on the fairly remote island of Barbados in the West Indies, she never foresaw the sort of stardom that would later befall her. That stardom came courtesy of a fateful meeting with a man named Evan Rogers. The New Yorker was vacationing in Barbados with his wife, a native of the island, when someone turned him on to Rihanna. Since Rogers had spent years producing pop artists -- including superstars like NSYNC, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Kelly Clarkson, Laura Pausini, and Rod Stewart -- he offered her the opportunity to record some music after he recognized her talent and potential. Along with Rogers' production partner, Carl Sturken (the other half of Syndicated Rhythm Productions), Rihanna recorded some demos that sparked the interest of the Carter Administration -- that is, newly appointed Def Jam president Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter. This led to an audition and, in turn, an on-the-spot offer to sign with Def Jam, which Rihanna indeed inked on the spot. Come summer 2005, Def Jam rolled out "Pon de Replay," the lead single of Music of the Sun, which was produced almost entirely by Rogers and Sturken and which synthesized Caribbean rhythms and beats with urban-pop songwriting. "Pon de Replay" caught fire almost immediately, climbing all the way to number two on The Billboard Hot 100 and contesting the half-summer reign of Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" atop the chart, and this was before Music of the Sun even had been released. The album spawned one other hit, "If It's Lovin' That You Want," which broke the Top 40. Rihanna's follow-up album, A Girl Like Me, was a greater success, spawning three big hits: a chart-topper ("S.O.S.") and two Top Tens ("Unfaithful," "Break It Off"). Rihanna's third album, Good Girl Gone Bad (2007), continued her success and, more notably, signaled a change of direction. Whereas her past two albums had been been imbalanced -- often weighed down by faceless balladry and canned Caribbean-isms -- Good Girl Gone Bad was a first-rate dance-pop album. Moreover, it was surprisingly solid, stacked with potential singles and easily enjoyable from beginning to end. Collaborators included Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Timbaland, and StarGate. The lead single, "Umbrella," shot to number one and, for the third year in a row, was a potential "song of the summer." By this point it was clear that Rihanna had become one of the biggest singles artists of the mid-2000s. Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

Who Will Be The Rookie Of The Year 2014?

To get to the top, hard work and determination is key. Over the years, The Headies has continued to recognize upcoming stars giving them an opportunity to showcase their talents.
Last year, fast rising Ink Edwards emerged winner from The Headies 2013 Rookie Competition while 2012 saw Burna Boy and Dammy Krane emerge as tied winners.
And just over a year gone, we are counting down to yet another award ceremony. Who is going to get nominated and who will emerge winner of this year’s Headies Rookie Competition? Time will certainly tell…
However, to get in for the Rookie Contest, artiste would have to wait till the registration door is opened. That will commence soon and just shortly after that voting will kick-start.
So brace up and keep your ears on the ground as more information would be communicated in due time. Remember the winner of the Rookie competition will perform on the big stage at The Headies 2014 while the 1st and 2nd runners up will perform at The Headies 2014 nominees’ party, so don’t miss out in this once in a lifetime opportunity.
NIGHT LIFE IN UNILAG
Funny how a simple thing as just a song  from a radio can inspire an article. Loool! Anyways, Lagosians basically live for the the night but that’s even over stretching the scope of this article. How about we make it a little more personal…. something we can relate with. Does a typical unilag student live for the night? The answer can be  yes or a no. If we draw a venn diagram and call the universal set ‘Unilag night life’, then there would exist in it two subsets….hehe! I just totally lost some people there. The lost folks would be typical elements of one of these subsets I’m going to talk about.
So as I was saying, one subset would be the typical balling guys and lets represent them by ‘A’. The other subset represents our nerd and we shall be calling them ‘B’. Well, since the class room is just a sequel to what they started in the library a night before and every other night, there’s not so much to talk about.  Then we have our very sharp guys. These ones overlap on both spheres and we will call them  the ‘C’ dudes- a little there and a little here.
These being said, let’s just enter into our major discussion for the day. You see one subset where all the drama is. The ‘A’ dudes which we’ve identified are the diversity dudes. To thoroughly operate in this sphere you need something called money. The money factor is what has subdivided this group into how they hangout with their female species at night.
Below are the further sub division that exist:
- The rich dudes
- The okay boys
- The hangout boys
- The Rich dude
Things are supposedly easy for this guy. Hangout nights are more spontaneous and just like rhythm unplugged, anything can happen! They come around in cars bearing gifts- most times, consumables. They say it makes conversation easier. Well, I don’t know. Things kick off in their cars with the lights off. Regardless where he parks, it is always dark in the car at night. You see, gists are that this guy sucks at conversing with babes. At least that’s the perception of…. “Well, she can’t really think I drove all the way here just to talk. So we can as well not beat round the bush” he says.  So it goes two ways; things gets a little too awkward with his ‘guest’ and the girl storms out making the visit very short. In the case the girl hasn’t finished munching her gift, she would still be carrying it while leaving the car.  So people can’t really figure out what happened. “He just came to visit and give me dinner”, she tells her friend.
- The Okay boys
So many guys exist in this sphere mehn. The bad thing is that girls rarely feel a thing for guys like this and  yeah, I have a theory to support this statement. You see, these kind of guys usually delude themselves by believing that have what it takes to handle the girls that roll with the rich dudes, so their conversations never really pass the telephone. In their attempt to impress, they even buy home delivery food for girls since they don’t have their personal cars.
- The hangout Boys
This is where all the gist is. You see, these boys would have been perfect with a little bit of substance (money). Let me first highlight all the qualities of these boys:
1. Smooth talker
2. Adequately polite
3. Knows hangouts spots and corners in school
4. Live for the night
The smooth talkers
This is just a case of- if you don’t have one, you sure must compensate it with something slightly adequate at least. A friend once told me about how he ‘gisted’ a friend all the way from ozone down to school. Apparently, it was all part of the plot. Shockingly, the girl said talking while walking down to school was her best part of the night. The guy however, told me it was just a solution to not having enough money for cab- thanks to ozone that chose not to include free pop corn and drink in the ticket fee that faithful Monday.
Adequately polite
For the rich dudes, being polite ends at opening the car door for that girl to enter- which never happens. So no rich dude is polite based on my conclusion. The hangout guys personally take it upon themselves to be girls’ school daddy and  yeah I mean it literally, school daddy! The scenario of a boyfriend in arts helping his engineering girl do her assignment is totally not impossible for these boys. They are so good at adjusting, at least temporarily if need be.
They know all the hangout spots and corners in school. Opportunities are rare and golden for them unlike the very much spontaneous rich dudes where anything can happen in their car. For these ones, the whole investment of smooth talking and doing assignments finally pay off and you think they would slack by not knowing the appropriate place to milk their cows. Nothing like bad market and enough of these corners ‘yapa’ on campus. I’m tempted to start listing them but let’s leave the gist for another day. Let me not start busting bubbles. Hehe!
“I wan go parol” “mehn, this last 5h na for this night o” is a common statement sodehinde boys are  very familiar with. They are like our typical igbo boys who hustle only to go and spend it in the villages. They starve to have enough for that chicken and chips at night, if you know what I mean…..loooool
Just my own biased perspective, but wait sef……am I even right????????????

HEADIES NOMINEE'S PARTY UPDATE

As we continue to anticipate the biggest awards ceremony in Nigeria, we would like to thrill you with a rundown of how The Headies nominees’ party has unfolded in previous years as we march on to a decade. The event which happens just before the major event is an avenue for all The Headies nominees to come together and party with their fans and loved ones.
Over the past eight years, The Headies nominee’s party has always been an experience to remember as some of them even have themes to govern it.
First point of call was the year 2006. The Headies Nominees party was a Lipton white party. It was not the too extravagant party but at least the first of its kind at that time.
Moving to 2007, the theme was the bling party. Nominees and fans came through in blings and all their glooming wears. The party which took place at the 11:45 night club saw nominees having a great time as they got ready for the awards proper.
We took things a notch higher in 2008 as Babylon was the venue for the nominee’s party. A fun packed party was the case as industry personalities were taken from the jetty all the way to the beach house. As always it was the first time and everyone present and those who watched the televised version were thrilled.
2009 was certainly a show stopper, yes! something out of this world. It was a truly Nigerian affair as nominees came in their indigenous cultural attires. The very idea of it from the start seemed almost impossible but with The Headies, almost everything is possible. Nominees and industry personalities went in a convoy all the way to Ajibogun village. Words are not enough to tell the experience but one thing remains certain in memory; it was the best at that time and till date is.
With so much love trailing the previous nominee’s parties, we decided to share the love by taking the nominee’s party to other parts of Nigeria in 2010. We visited Ilorin where fans couldn’t get enough of the nominees and we left there leaving a mark.
Off to Abuja in 2011 where fans partied hard with the nominees. There were also performances to spice up the night. Overall, the atmosphere was electrifying with performances and good music that kept all on the dance floor all night long.
The 2012 edition took a new leaf as it was held in two cities; Abuja and Lagos. Lagos was the first point of call and as a preface to the Hip Hop World Awards, also known as The Headies, holding on October 20, a nominees’ party was held on October 13, 2012. The star studded party was held at the Cool World Showroom on Adeola Odeku, Victoria Island.
It was an opportunity for brand sponsors, nominees to mix with other artistes and music fans. Host for the night were Toke Makinwa and Vixen. The night was also witness to performances from some nominees like Davido, Vector, Chidinma, Iyanya, Ice Prince and Flowssick.
Then to Abuja where To give a second nominees party was held in the Federal Capital Territory on October 18. The party which held at Club Vaniti in Wuse 2, saw award nominees flown, with all expenses paid, from Lagos to Abuja, specifically for the event. The event was a rare chance for Abuja-based music fans to party with their favorite artistes and see them perform live.
In 2013, there was however no party but the nominee’s party is set to make a comeback this year, bigger and stronger. So get ready to turn up!!!

 LATEST ON HEADIES AWARD 2014

The countdown to the Headies 2014 Award has begun and we all just can’t wait for Africa’s biggest event.
The event which brings together individuals in the music industry is an initiative from Smooth Promotions Limited to recognize the distinguished achievements of artistes and entertainers in the entertainment industry.
The award which is broadcasted live to over 10 million viewers in Africa and beyond is one event you definitely don’t want to miss it for anything in this world.
That category that always catches the attention of everyone has to be the Next Rated category which is unarguably the most famous and keenly contested category in the Awards. The category, meant to spotlight the next artiste to make a mark in the mainstream, was one of the pioneer categories when the Headies was established in 2006.
Past winners of the categories includes Asa in 2006, Overdose in 2007, Wande Coal in 2008, Omawumi in 2009, Skuki in 2010, Wizkid in 2011, Davido in 2012, and recently Sean Tizzle in 2013.
